Return to Bangkok

Welcome Back!
Laundry and electricity

Oh, the smells and sites of Bangkok-- how we did miss you.  The trip back to Thailand was not was exciting as the way to Cambodia.  We flew on Thai Air and had a lovely, short flight back to the chaos that is "the Big Mango."

We discovered that one of the quickest ways through the city isn't on the roads, but through the city's canals.  The canal stops are everywhere, if you know where to look, and whisk you through the city.  Each trip is pretty cheap, and we finally determined that it is based on distance.

You hop on and the ticket person, walking along the outside of the boat, leans in to take your money and hands you a ripped paper ticket.  The diesel motor roars to life, and away you go!  And when the water starts to splash up into the boat, you just pull up the curtains.

Along the canals, the back sides of houses and buildings are full of laundry, trash, gardens--anything and everything.  The stench of the water is overwhelmingly awful, to be sure. The sound of the engine is almost deafening.  But is the way to travel through the city!
