Banteay Srei

Banteay Srei is an older temple that is northwest of Siem Reap, built starting in year AD 967.  It means the "Citadel of the Women", and it is said that it was built by women because of carvings are too fine and intricate and delicate to be carved by men.

This is also the only major temple not built by a monarch, but built by the monarch's tutor. The stone isn't the sandstone from the other temples, it is a reddish-pinkish color.  The whole place is dedicated to Shiva and many people call this temple the jewel of them all.

Unfortunately, I didn't get to see it in person.  While Will and Jen were snapping these photos, I was sleeping/unconscious at a Cambodian field hospital, suffering from heat exhaustion and dehydration.  Somehow I think that they had the better time....  and don't worry, there are photos of my day with the witch doctor to come.
