Last year we had a bunch of random seeds that we didn't know what to do with them. Can't throw them away, after all--they are good seeds! So, we threw them into the upper garden, into an area that we now call the "mystery garden" because what it was going to grow was, well, a mystery!
One of the plants that came up was a celery plant-- only identified this year when we really started to look at what survived the winter. (Also surviving the winter: garlic, chives, some carrots, and Brussels sprouts). We broke off a stalk and had a munch-- fresh, spicy celery! Quite delicious actually, and we didn't do a thing to make it so. We threw the seeds into the ground and pretty much ignored the area for a whole year. Not really what you are supposed to do in urban gardening, but hey-- it worked this time.
