Old Sarum

After Stonehenge, we continued down the road to Old Sarum on our way to Salisbury. Old Sarum is set within a 1st-century fort that was built by the Romans, and then built on top of by the Normans. This is the castle of Henry II, and when he moved to London, he sometimes kept his queen, Eleanor of Aquitaine here. (ohh Poor Katherine Hepburn.). Not much is left but you can see some of the stone foundation and the lower rooms, including the gardy loo for Henry. The upper wooden structures have all disappeared, but you can still imagine the imposing towers from the 1100s.

The fort and castle were eventually abandoned as everyone moved to New Sarum, or Salisbury, as it was more fertile in that river valley.

What is a gerdy loo?

It's his toilet... A fancy way of saying to watch out below, as they would throw out the waste from the bathroom out the window. When someone yelled, "Guardy Loo", you definitely got out of the way. That is also where the Brits get the word loo from.
