Christiansborg Castle

In 1167 Bishop Absalon, founder of Copenhagen, built his place here.  In the years since, this became the castle for the royal family--built on top of Absalon's ruins.  This is the third castle here. The one was torn down and the other burned. So, Christiansborg Castle was finished only in 1928.    Nowadays it contains the Queen's reception rooms, the Danish Parliament, the Great Hall, and the Prime Ministry.  You can't take photos inside the building and you have to wear plastic booties when you walk through.  It is very pretty and the 17 tapestries given to Queen Margrethe as a gift for her 50th birthday are bright, colorful, and full of details of Denmark's history.

In the plaza out front, Christian the IV rides his great stead.  Behind him, from the balacony, the Queen would wave to the crowds below on special occassions.

Once you pass through Christiansborg Castle, you enter into the Riding Ground Complex, with a large fountain in the center.  At the gate to the castle, Christian the IX rides. This area has parts that are from the first castle, from 1742.
