We called the plumber and he was able to not only diagnosis the cause but fix it in literally 3 minutes. The caulk where the tiles meet the tub was loose/moving/no longer adhering-- I am not sure of the technical words for its general failure but it failed-- and allowing water to seep through.

He was able to remove the old caulk and recaulk it within seconds. We were thrilled that was all that it took, as this bathroom is set in concrete and to try to get access to anything other than the pipes leading to the taps would have required breaking through tiles and walls. Now, we are waiting for the dining room walls to dry out so we can scrap and repaint and everything will be as good as new! Then we will be ready for another round of guests.
